Exploring with Clay

Students in various grades have been or soon will be exploring with clay. We will create pinch pots as well as pieces with coils and slabs. Here are a few photos of 6th grade as they construct with clay.

Inquiry through the Arts

Many classes have been exploring inquiry by looking at pieces of artwork, observing things they notice and asking questions like What do you see? What do you think is going on in this painting? What evidence do you have to back up your thinking? Students enjoy looking at art and delving into pieces with a more critical look. We intend to more of this as the year progresses. Join us in this activity by asking the same questions at home when you observe pieces of art or listen to music as a family. Here is an example we’ve looked at in 5th grade.

Amate Bark Paintings by 5th grade

The fifth grade has been creating Amate Bark Paintings in the style of Mexican folk artists. These examples were created on brown paper that has been torn on the edges to mimic the look of bark. Students used bright colors and lots of detail as in the original art they observed from Mexico. To see them all, don’t forget to attend our Arts Show coming this Spring. Stay tuned for more details.
